While approaching the end of the school year, school-related burnout increases for students of all ages as school demands increase causing ex- haustion, cynical and detached atti- tudes toward school, and feelings of inadequacy begin to peek due to in- security of meeting these demands. As a result, they experience intense stress and pressure. When students cannot cope with being under stress and pressure for a long time, they develop burnout symptoms that stem from school symptoms in three dimensions: physical, affective, and cognitive. Physical symptoms can include chronic tiredness; decreased energy and resistance to disease; head, back, and muscle aches; and disrupted sleep patterns. Affective symptoms include insecurity, a lack of confidence about the future, con- stantly feeling tense and irritable, being angry and impatient, exhib- iting less polite/respectful attitudes when relating with others, and de- veloping negative attitudes towards socialization opportunities. Cogni- tively, burnout can manifest as be- ing discontented with school work, being disinclined to engage in work completion and school-related envi- ronments, school absenteeism, and developing negative attitudes and beliefs towards life and its meaning. Signs of Stress and School Burnout: • Sudden dramatic change in the amount of effort put into school • Avoiding school and tests by refus- ing to attend school • Major change in attitude (moody or careless) • Disruptive behavior • Withdrawing from environments, social situations, or having emo- tional outbursts • Negative attitude towards school and teachers • Trouble concentrating • Procrastination Strategies for Parents: • Gather information from student and teacher(s) • Communicate directly with school staff • Schedule a meeting with the teacher and participate in solution based conversation • Check in school regularly and dai- ly academic requirements • Identify your child’s struggles and strengths and create a strength based approach • Support your child with these fol- lowing interventions: ✓ Promote a growth mindset ✓ Encourage your child to have a positive attitude towards the fu- ture ✓ Teach proactive coping strategies for both the home and school en- vironment ✓ Help your child prioritize tasks ✓ Create a calendar together and a checklist (helps with time manage- ment and reduces stress) ✓ Break activities into chunks Sponsored Announcement ✓ Check in with them and offer your help ✓ Encourage your child to add activities he/she enjoys into their daily schedule ✓ Allow your child to take frequent breaks and step away from activities that are becoming frustrating ✓ Increase healthy snacks ✓ Make sure your child gets a good night sleep by removing all electronics from their room and eliminate exposure to screens at least 30 minutes before bedtime Nancy Provataris, PhD Greek School Director stspyridongreekschool@gmail.com
