7 THE SHEPHERD • MARCH 2021 • SAINT SPYRIDON GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF SAN DIEGO Lord Byron became a martyr of the Greek Revolution and a legend all over Europe and America. His in- volvement helped spark in- terest of other nations in the cause of Greek inde- pendence. Philhellenic societies sprang up like mushrooms around the world. Many men, mili- tary leaders, businessmen and intellectuals, joined in. Three famous Americans were among them: Edward Everret, Dr. Samuel Howe, and George Jarvis. The last two were officers who fought the Turks on Greek soil. In fact, the last one, Jarvis, also died as Lord Byron did. Supporters of Greek independence meanwhile in other countries, such as Germany, included Prof. Th- eers, King Charles 10th, Ludwig King of Bavaria, the father of Othon, the first king of modern Greece, Victor Hugo and the fa- mous painter Delacroix. In Switzer- land, Hayward, a banker, organized a remarkably successful fundraiser to support the Revolution. Certainly, the Phil- hellene movement was a tremendous help to the movement toward Greek independence. Even today when Greece has long since won her independence, Philhellenism is still alive among many people who still respect and honor the contributions of Greece to world civilization. May the Lord bless all the Greeks and Phil- hellenes all over the world and each and ev- ery one of you and your families. Η ΕΛΛΑΔΑ ΠΟΤΕ ΔΕΝ ΠΕΘΑΙΝΕΙ! Athena Kotinopoulos Georges, M.Ed.
