9 THE SHEPHERD • JUNE 2024 • SAINT SPYRIDON GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF SAN DIEGO Χριστός Ανέστη! On behalf of Philoptochos Anthou- sa Chapter, we would like to thank our loving St. Spyridon community for your continued support of our Chapter. On Great and Holy Friday, our lovely Kouvouklion (Epitaphios) was adorned with gorgeous flowers, sprinkled with rose water, and pre- pared for the community’s rever- ence; all made possible by the loving and humble hands of our Philopto- chos members with the outpouring of support from our St. Spyridon community. A special thank you to Melanie Anastopulos for overseeing this endeavor – it was truly spectac- ular, and I hope you all had a chance to see it in person. Through one of our many commu- nity outreach programs, this spring we supported “Operation Classroom” where we chose a school in desper- ate need of our assistance. Dewey Elementary School in Point Loma, where a large majority of the stu- dents are from military families, was the beneficiary of this assistance. Ap- proximately 85% of the 300 students have parents serving in the military. In hopes of offsetting some of the personal expenses teachers often must incur, we requested a “Wish List” from the school for needed supplies. In mid-April, committee members Linda Farrell and Paulette Gallanis visited classes at Dewey El- ementary and distributed gift bags containing books, science and math tools, and art supplies. Teachers and their young students were over- whelmed and very appreciative for the assistance we were able to pro- vide! In the coming weeks, we are excited and honored to be host city of the 2024 Biennial Philoptochos Con- vention held in conjunction with the National Clergy Laity Congress. Showcasing all that San Diego has to offer, this gathering promises to be a celebration of community, compas- sion, and commitment to service. With engaging workshops and in- spiring keynote speakers, the con- vention provides a unique opportu- nity for members of many Philopto- chos chapters to come together, ex- change ideas, and renew their dedi- cation to making a difference in the lives of those in need. Join us as we unite in our shared mission to em- body the spirit of philanthropy and create a brighter future of Philopto- chos and the parishes we serve.
