Our meetings will contin- ue to take place at 12:00 noon and usually last about an hour to an hour and a half. We will try once again to set up a hybrid approach where women who cannot attend in person can join us via Zoom. At our first meeting,we always spend a little time with Introductions – getting to know one another, if not initially, then at least, a little better. We also go over the materials we will be using, our schedule, and how we will go about our study. Our prima- ry source as we read and discuss St. Paul’s Epistle to the Hebrews will be the Orthodox Study Bible with its extensive footnotes and articles. In this particular Epistle, we will en- counter some very important ideas about Who Christ is , what “God’s Rest” means, and about the “Royal Priesthood,” among other things, so these extra notes which are always based on the interpretations of the Church Fathers in our Orthodox Tradition can be very helpful to our understanding. Also, at one of our meetings at the beginning, Fr. Andrew will join us to meet our group and to help get us focused on what is important about this particular Epistle. roughout our study,we will schedule additional sessions for Fr. Andrew to meet with us to answer the many questions we always encounter along the way. We pray that this year will be one of strengthening bonds. We survived the last two years meeting remotely, from afar over Zoom and found that “nothing can separate us from the love of Christ.” (Romans 8:35) We look forward once again to “gathering in love around the Word of God” so that we may become “bet- ter doers of the word and not hearers only.” (James 1:22) If you would like to learn more about our group, contact (call or text) Susan Miserlis at 619-243-9864 or email susanmiserlis@gmail.com With Love in Christ, + e Women of the Word Bible Study Group Creator of the universe, setting times and seasons by Your sole authority bless the cycle of the year of Your grace, O Lord, guarding our rulers and Your nation in peace, at the interces- sion of the eotokos, and save us. – Apolytikion of Begin- ning of the Indiction e Church has always celebrated the beginning of the New Year on September 1st. ough we have not had a touch of Fall yet, the bookstore would like to send warm greetings to all our parishioners for the beginning of the Ecclesiastical New Year (Beginning of the Indiction). is pious tradition the Church holds because this was the day that Jesus of Naz- areth began preaching the good news of His mission. He en- tered the Synagogue and read from the book of the Prophet Isaiah: “ e spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has an- nointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” A wonderful way to begin the new Ecclesiastical New Year is to enhance your understanding of what we believe as Or- thodox Christians. Come browse and seek out a new book to read. Parents, we have a great section of children’s books to choose from to enrich and reinforce what your children have learned in Sunday School.Yes, it does start in our homes through discussion and setting the example of good Chris- tian values. With the beginning of the Ecclesiastical New Year it is our hope that many more of us will be motivated to broaden our understanding and fullness of the Orthodox faith. As St. Seraphim of Sobolev reminds us: “Do not adapt your faith to your life, but your life to the faith”. We look forward to seeing you in the bookstore! God bless you all!
