5 THE SHEPHERD • SEPTEMBER 2022 • SAINT SPYRIDON GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF SAN DIEGO GREEK LANGUAGE SCHOOL Χαίρετε! Once again, this summer, millions of tourists visited Greece, and the country became one of the top destinations with the number of visitors exceeding the record year for tourism in 2019.With the most pop- ular visitors’ activity being, without comparison, the enjoyment of the Greek waters, other popular activi- ties include visits to the numerous archaeological sites, the “πανηγύρια”, and delicious Greek food! O Παρθενώνας e Parthenon is the most brilliant monument of the Athenian state. It is the major attraction of the city. Its name comes from one of the many titles given to the goddess Athe- na, which is Athena the Virgin (η Παρθένος) and was given in the 5th century BC to the chamber inside the temple where her statue is housed.Al- though its columns are subtly closed inwards to provide a better viewing angle when observing it from below, it can effectively shed rainwater and have the required anti-seismic rein- forcement, due to a very thin yield curve. Its external dimensions are a perfect golden rectangle (the ratio of its length to its width is approxi- mately equal to 1.61803), and it is believed that the Parthenon was built with great precision, according to this mathematical ratio of the so-called sacred geometry. Το Πανηγύρι Summer holidays in the Greek is- lands are not complete without at- tending at least one “πανηγύρι”. A Paniyiri is a centuries old traditional festival organized during the sum- mer months mainly in the villages of Greek islands where the main saint is celebrated. e festival is an occasion to get youngest and oldest together, to meet locals, to dance, to talk, to drink and eat, to feast. Το Φαγητό Traditional Greek food is tasty all year round, but if we had to choose the best season, it would be the sum- mer without second thoughts. Ντάκος (Dákos) is a Cretan meze consisting of a slice of soaked dried bread or “παξιμάδι” (paximádi) topped with chopped tomatoes and crumbled feta cheese, and flavored with herbs such as dried oregano. Olives and pepper can also be added. Κολοκυθοκεφτέδες (Zucchini frit- ters) are a tasty appetizer, made of zucchini, crumbs, feta cheese, and spices, and the mix is fried in olive oil. Tzatziki sauce complements the flavor perfectly. Μουσακάς (Moussaká) is one of the most famous Greek dishes. It’s made with sliced eggplant, minced beef, to- mato sauce, bechamel sauce, and lots of spices. Pantelis alassinos, a Greek singer and songwriter, in one of his songs, “Ένας Μικρός Σεπτέμβρης” imprints that feeling of nostalgia that settles in as the Fall is popping up. Music: Παντελής Θαλασσινός Lyrics: Ηλίας Κατσούλης Ένας μικρός Σεπτέμβρης, βάζει τα κλάματα / που στο σχολειό τον πάνε, να μάθει γράμματα / θέλει να παίξει ακόμα, με τ' άστρα τ' ουρανού / πριν έρθουν πρωτοβρόχια και συννεφιές στο νου / Πρωτάκι σκολιαρούδι / του κλέβουν το τραγούδι A little September, starts crying / where they take it to school, to be edu- cated / it still wants to shine, with the stars of the sky / before showers and clouds come to mind / First-grader / they steal its song Nevertheless, September is here and, at the Greek School, no showers or clouds occupy our minds, but an- ticipation is buzzing with the Fall Semester being just around the cor- ner!
