We ended 2021 on a strong nancial foot- ing because of your attentiveness and generosity. So, again, THANK YOU! And further, as we nish 2022, we all face the same issues which can lead to anxiety about our world and our future: but, in this moment, our beloved church, St. Spyridon, con- tinues to be a beacon of hope and an ark which shepherds us to calmer seas every day. us, we are blessed to have one another communally and spiritually. is is precious and ir- replaceable to each of us. You know this intuitively when you attend the Divine Liturgy and receive holy communion, at- tend the other divine services and Sacraments of the Church and have an opportunity to build and strengthen fellowship with one another. As we near the end of the 2022 calendar year the Steward- ship Committee respectfully reminds you to once again to take a moment to ful l your pledge for 2022 by sending your contributions to the o ce and/or sign up-up through “We Share” on-line at our parish website: stspyridon.org to make your weekly and/or monthly payment toward your pledged amount. On behalf of the Parish Council, the Stewardship Commit- tee once again says “thank you” and God bless you for your stewardship e orts. John Kalas Fr. One of the great things about us- ing the Orthodox Study Bible is the abundant footnotes on each page that include interpretations and quotes from our Church Fathers like St. John Chrysostom, St. Gregory the eologian, St. Ambrose and many others. is is really helpful because we o en say as Orthodox Christians that we read Holy Scripture “over the shoulders of our Church Fathers” – that is, receiving their interpreta- tions as inspired by the Holy Spirit and as part of our Holy Tradition. From the very rst chapter St. Paul dives into e Supreme Revelation of the Son of God, Christ Without Beginning, and Creator of All, and the bounty of footnotes help us un- derstand better the very deep con- cepts that he is teaching including tying it to our liturgy and our Creed - “In Old Testament times God spoke constantly through the Holy Spirit in the Law and the prophets, leading His people into greater truth. Now He speaks directly, through His own in- carnate Son… e rst half of verse 3 ‘who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person,’ is quoted verbatim in the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great. e brightness of His glory expresses the Son’s nature, His origin from and identity of na- ture with the Father. He is the Father’s brightness because He is begotten of the Father beyond time and without change. us, the Nicene Creed speaks of “Light of Light.” We also are reminded from the be- ginning that St. Paul was very well- versed in Holy Scripture. In fact, much of what he writes in his epis- tles are explanations of how Christ is the ful llment of the Old Testament and God’s plan for our salvation. So many of his chapters are full of quotes from the Psalms and refer- ences to other books like Samuel and Isaiah. In the rst few chapters alone, St. Paul quotes from the Psalms over ten times as he teaches about who the Son of God is, as in Heb 1:5 where he asks, “For to which of the angels did He ever say: ‘You are my Son, Today I have begotten you’? And again: ‘I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son’” quoting Psalm 2 to make the point that Christ is superior to the angels, and that this idea was al- ready present in the Old Testament scriptures. All this brings us back, at the very least, to devoting ourselves to the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, which allows us to press upon Christ and to hear His word , amen. +A 1 FR. ANDREW
