ANDREW from bad human actions. It is true that a great part of these measures and expenditures can- not be taken from isolated individuals because they go beyond their capabilities. Sometimes they even go beyond the capabilities of the in- dividual states and require interstate collab- oration and even cooperation of the entirety of the human community. Thus, we heartily salute the international consultations on this matter, which are taking place or will take place and wish them to conclude their de- liberations with unanimous decisions on the measures that should be taken on their imple- mentation. Nevertheless, the greatest part of the contri- butions to the creation of this crisis is due to the excessive waste of energy by isolated indi- viduals. Thus, the restriction of this wasteful consumption will blunt the acuteness of the problem, while the constant increase in the use of renewable sources of energy will intermit- tently contribute to its alleviation. However insignificant the contribution of every individ- ual to the averting of a new catastrophic natu- ral phenomena may appear, we are all obliged to do as individuals whatever we can, because only then we shall be able to pray to God bold- ly to supply what is lacking in our own efforts and possibilities. Hence, we paternally urge everyone to come to the realization of their personal responsibil- ity and do whatever they can to avert the in- crease of the temperature of the Earth and the aggravation of the environmental conditions. We pray fervently to God that He should look favorably on the common effort of all and pre- vent other threatening disasters on our natu- ral environment, within which He ordered us to live and fight the good fight in order that we enter the Heavenly Kingdom, Amen. My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Yes, the financial health and stewardship to- ward our parish, the Church universal, and our families are important, but His All-Holi- ness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has reminded us that our stewardship toward the Earth that God made “in the beginning” is of the utmost importance as well. As individ- uals in the greater world around us, do we think about or struggle with the things we throw in the trash, or with the things we pur- chase and why? Do we pause for a moment to ask ourselves: what will happen to those things once their “usefulness” is finished? If not, maybe today is a good time to start. +A
