In this book, which is said to be the very rst epistle written, James, the rst bish- op of Jerusalem, guides his readers/listeners along the path of understanding faith and how it works. In the second chapter James focuses on what he calls the Royal law, the Law of Love, the second commandment of Christ: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” He goes into detail here and warns the new Christians and us against partiality – preferring certain types or groups of people over another. He also reminds us in plain words: “Mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:12) encouraging us to practice the same compassion that Christ has for us instead of always criticizing or judging one another. During this past month we also spent a lot of time discussing what a dynamic and active faith looks like – that it is trust in God’s will for us, con dence that He loves and cares for us, that He is always “in our midst,” and that we must rely on Him in all our trials. It also means that we have an honest and abiding belief in Him and in all His ways, a true and living faith, a faith that is continually grow- ing, is grounded in a constant relationship with God, that is practiced in daily prayer, reading of the Holy Scripture, putting what we learn from the Word into action through how we think, act, and speak with one an- other. James teaches plainly and to the point where he says, “Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will ee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and He will li you up.” (James 4:7-8,10) is seems a good rule for how we can act in every circumstance that we encounter. In the same chapter James speaks about love and healing (of body, mind, and spirit) as the principle works of faith. Ultimately, he preaches a faith that works and that is loyal to God – a true living faith that encourages repentance, patience, and self-control. For the month of November until we break in December, we look forward to reading the rst Epistle of Peter which continues these themes of faith and love. Our group is still open to anyone who would like to join us. If interested, you can contact Susan Miserlis at 619-243-9864 (call or text) or email susanmiserlis@gmail.com .
