5 THE SHEPHERD • NOVEMBER 2023 • SAINT SPYRIDON GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF SAN DIEGO Sponsored Announcement The Greek Dance and Choral program has been busy with fundraising, performing and practices. On the evening of September 23rd, we hosted our first dinner dance fundraiser, aptly titled “My Big Fat Greek Glendi.” The hall was elegantly candlelit and decorated in blue and gold, and the air was filled with the festive sounds of “Greek Melody” who entertained us with tradition- al bouzouki music and song. Tony Petroulias, our very own dance director, did double-duty as chef, and we feasted on braised short rib, fava puree and asparagus. A delicious karidopita (Greek walnut cake) coupled with vanilla ice cream rounded out the meal. Our Pelagos dance group acted as waiters and performers, delighting the crowd with a suite of island dances. There was plenty of opportunity to burn off the meal with dancing throughout the night (check out our pictures) and a wonderful time was had by all! The next day, we had our Loyals Greek Night Fundraiser, where Kathy Meck, our choir director, sang the national anthem before the game. To the delight of the congregation, on Sunday October 1st the Youth Choir sang the entire Divine Liturgy. It was thrilling (if not a bit nerve-racking) for the kids, but they did a phenomenal job without the adult choir. We were happy to welcome a few new members join our Ta Spiridonakia group this year. It’s amazing how quickly our youngest members learn! Pelagos has been practicing twice weekly and studying FDF videos in preparation for competition in February. Remember, Pelagos is available to perform at wed- dings, baptisms, corporate events, fundraisers and as outreach for charitable organizations; so if you would like to have them perform, please reach out to stspyridondance@gmail.com or call 714-931-2431.
