9 THE SHEPHERD • NOVEMBER 2023 • SAINT SPYRIDON GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF SAN DIEGO We celebrated the beginning of our Ecclesiastical Year at our Munchies, Mimosas and More event on Sunday, October 8th! This was our opportu- nity to thank our St. Spyridon com- munity for your support and share the good works of Philoptochos and our Anthousa Chapter. As we continue to put faith into ac- tion through our Philoptochos min- istries, we are thrilled to welcome to our new members and returning members. Special thanks to Melanie Anastopulos and Kelly Samouris who once again chaired our MMM event. Philoptochos was founded over 90 years ago. The word means “Friends of the Poor.” It is the official char- itable arm of the Greek Orthodox Church and second largest Chris- tian philanthropic organization in the Western Hemisphere. Some of the Ministries our chapter supports include: Kids ‘n’ Cancer, Feeding the Homeless, Hellenic College/Holy Cross, Hellenic College/Holy Cross Adopt a Student, Children’s Medi- cal Fund, International Orthodox Christian Charities, Assistance for our Troops and Veterans, Disaster Relief, and many more… Our chapter has gifted $18,000 so far this year to these organizations and causes, because of the support and generosity of our members and community. The foundation of our local Anthou- sa Philoptochos Chapter is not only to support our own church com- munity and beyond through our ongoing year-round activities. A very special thank you to Andreas Capetanakis and his team for work- ing closely with “FOCUS” Charity to prepare meals for homeless in San Diego. The mission of FOCUS is to serve the poor by bringing to- gether Orthodox Christian churches and community partners to provide Food, Occupation, Clothing & Shel- ter.
