7 THE SHEPHERD • DECEMBER 2020 • SAINT SPYRIDON GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF SAN DIEGO Merry Christmas from Saint Spyridon GOYA LIBRARY & BOOKSTORE We begin the celebration of the Nativity of our Savior Jesus Christ. As we desire to know God, we look to Christ. God enters history and the world when Christ is born. As the Gospel of John 1:14 states, “the Word became esh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father”. is past September our dear Bookstore and Library founder, Mary Gikas, passed away to be with our Lord. We honor her memory, and are very grateful to continue her ministry that she gladly upheld for over 30 years. Mary retired from the bookstore in November 2012, and is quoted in that November newsletter for saying: I thank our church for allowing me to o er this ministry for so many years. Words cannot express the ful llment I have received. We will truly miss our wonderful friend, and may her dear memory be eternal. e bookstore would like to thank the following parishioners for their donations in memory of Mary Gikas: Mariana Alia- no, Anthea Billings, Lou & Joan Dimas, Dn Michael & Tina Kallas, Anastasia Kyriakidis, James & Mary Mastorakos, and Bill & Stephanie Mourafetis. We are excited to stock a new book in the bookstore: inking Orthodox, Understanding and Acquiring the Orthodox Christian Mind, written by Dr. Eugenia Scarvelis Constantinou. Dr. Eugenia hosts the popular podcast Search the Scriptures Live! on Ancient Faith Radio and holds master’s degrees in eology. She is known to most of us as Presvytera Jeannie and has lifelong roots in our parish. She brings her more than forty years’ experience as a pro- fessor, Bible teacher, and speaker to bear in explaining that Or- thodox Christianity is based on preserving the mind of the early Church, its phronema. Please let us know if you would like a copy of this wonderful new book! e Nativity Fast has begun and we look forward to this joyous time of year, despite navigating our lives during this time of pandemic. If you would like any Christmas gi items from the bookstore, arrangements can be made for payment, pick up or delivery.
