3 THE SHEPHERD • JUNE 2022 • SAINT SPYRIDON GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF SAN DIEGO St. Lazarus in San Diego On the Saturday of Lazarus, Presvytera Jeannie Constantinou brought a relic of St. Lazarus to St. Spyridon to be venerated by the faithful. She explained that they had been given to Fr. Costas by another Cy- priot priest who received part of the relic himself in the 1970’s when the tomb of St. Lazarus was rediscovered. According to a strong and unbroken Church tradition on the island of Cyprus, St. Lazarus travelled there a er the Resur- rection because the Judeans had decided to kill him as well as Jesus because the raising of Lazarus was the strongest proof of the divinity of Christ. Lazarus served as a bishop on the island of Cyprus for many years. When he died he was bur- ied there. Eventually a church was built over his tomb in what is today the city of Larnaca. e current church dedicated to St. Lazarus was built in the 800’s by the Byzantine emperor Leo IV who had tak- en the relics – or so it was believed - back to Constantinople when he constructed a Church dedicated to St. Lazarus. e Cy- priots were always proud of the fact that Lazarus, whom the Lord had raised from the dead a er four days, had lived and died on Cyprus. e British, who ruled Cyprus as a colony for many years, always disputed that Lazarus was ever in Cyprus, since there was no “proof.” But in 1970, there was a re in the Church of St. Lazarus in Larnaca. Renovations were neces- sary and while digging under the Church to support the structure, workers found the original Roman sarcophagus (large stone casket) and inside of it was a wooden box with some of the bones of the saint still inside. An inscription identi ed the bones as “the four day dead friend of Christ” (John 12). e tomb was located directly under the altar, which also con rmed that these were the relics of Lazarus himself. St. Lazarus, pray to the Lord for us!
