June and Summer in Greece e weather is getting rapidly warmer, some people have already gone to the beach for their rst swim of the year, June is here and so Summer o cially begins! June is named a er Zeus’ wife Hera, who in Latin was called Juno . In di erent regions of Greece, June has its own special name. In Grevená, it is referred to as «Κερασάρης» (Kerasáris) and in Pontos as «Κερασινός» (Kerasinós) because the «κεράσια» (cherries) ripen. However, June is mainly known as «ο Θεριστής» (the Harvester). For this, it is di- rectly related to the ripening and harvesting of cereals. Every summer, Greece is visited by millions of tourists from all over the world. It is a journey into a 5,000-year history. Myth and reality become one. Leonidas’ 300 is not the movie, the Odyssey is not the book, Jupiter is not a planet. Here, all this is history, which re ects the evolution of the human race and highlights the greatness of the psyche. e magni cent islands (about 6000) with the mesmerizing beaches and green waters, and the cities of quite special beauty are the two main reasons why people like to travel to Greece. e destination is full of surprises and places of great interest. Furthermore, the archeological sites of the country are points of special attraction for tourists: the Acropolis; the temple of Posei- don in Sounio; Ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games; Delphi, the “navel of the earth”; the ancient theater of Epidaurus; Vergina and the Minoan palaces of Knossos in Crete. Visitors discover the harmonious coexistence of ancient, modern, and tradi- tional elements. Finally, food is an integral part of the Greek reality and culture, and a key feature of the cordial hospitality of the Greeks. It invites visitors into a game of discovering new and rich avors, aromas, colors, authentic prod- ucts. Greek gastronomy excites: traditional Greek breakfast (Greek co ee, frappes, yo- gurt, honey, jams), colorful dishes of authen- tic Mediterranean cuisine (pittas, eggplant salad, spinach-rice, rabbit stew, lentils, chick- peas), famous Greek local products (féta, ol- ives, olive oil), re ned wines (“agiorgítiko”, “moschofílero”, “améthystos”), tasty beers (“Alfa”, “Fix”) and local drinks (ouzo, rakí, tsípouro, retsína).
